CLIP DESCRIPTION:
John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) invokes the Declaration of Independence and the forefathers of the United States in his plea that all men are born free.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This Steven Spielberg-directed exploration into a long-ago episode in African-American history recounts the trial that followed the 1839 rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad and captures the complex political maneuverings set in motion by the event. Filmed in New England and Puerto Rico, the 152-minute drama opens with a pre-credit sequence showing Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) and the other Africans in a violent takeover of the Amistad. Captured, they are imprisoned in New England where former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman), viewing the rebels as "freedom fighters," approaches property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), who attempts to prove the Africans were "stolen goods" because they were kidnapped. Running for re-election, President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne) overturns the lower court's decision in favor of the Africans. Former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) is reluctant to become involved, but when the case moves on to the Supreme Court, Adams stirs emotions with a powerful defense. The storyline occasionally cuts away to Spain where the young Queen Isabella (Anna Paquin) plays with dolls; she later debated the Amistad case with seven U.S. presidents. The character portrayed by Morgan Freeman is a fictional composite of several historical figures. For authentic speech, the Africans speak the Mende language, subtitled during some scenes but not others.

This is one of the most bastardized bullshit Marxist scenes in Hollywood movie history. The Declaration of Independence says creator-endowed unalienable rights. Inalienable rights? Forget it. It’s unalienable rights given to us from God and we cannot alienate ourselves from those rights. Well what do you expect when you’re dealing with liberal Steven Spielberg bullshit.

I love the genuine look of awe on Djimon Hounsou’s face while Anthony Hopkins says his lines.

I watch films. Lots of them. Turner Classic Movies is a good place to start. This scene. Which, is almost 15 minutes long....moves me like none other's I have ever seen. He was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. But. For me, it is his words that move me, and should be relevant even today.

His accent btw might well have been how the elderly and more educated Americans at the time would have sounded: in 1841, the U.S were still a relatively young nation and many of those who were young in the days of British colonial rule were still alive. This whole split between American and British English (as both forms of English began to evolve along separate lines) was still an ongoing process.

We know what Adams would have sounded like- it exists to this day in the Boston Brahmin accent and it sounds nothing like this.

It should also be stated the non rhotic British dialect as we know today is fairly recent creation within the past few centuries and something created in the 18th century to separate class distinction. It is widely believed the British spoke with the rhotic hard R sound and closely resembled to what we know as American English. Of course American dialects have changed a bit since the 18th century, but I think many tend to agree Hopkins’ approach is a more accurate representation of American English of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Spielberg apparently was so overawed and inspired by Hopkins doing this whole speech in one take that he refused to call him Tony as everyone else did on set and insisted on calling him Sir Anthony for the rest of the shoot.

Are we not to understand the significance of the story unless we hear such music behind it all? I mean really....... So sick of tired hollywood cliches that appear so often throughout these decades. Ugh....

Cool. It is Spielbergs style, not all filmmakers that make it.

In fact, the Amistad case revolved around the Atlantic slave trade - by 1840 outlawed by international treaty - and had nothing whatsoever to do with slavery as a domestic institution. Incongruous as it may seem, it was perfectly possible in the nineteenth century to condemn the importation of slaves from Africa while simultaneously defending slavery and the flourishing slave trade within the United States

Great movie and wonderful performance by A. Hopkins.. And he makes a good point.. Things haven't really changed that much even today.. Freedom, democracy and independence are fine when they suit us, but when they don't it's very easy to forget all about them.. :/

@Richard Shaffer Indeed.. In fact I'd say especially people! I've recently come to the conclusion that all our civilized achievements even as a concept.. Constitutions, freedom, democracy, civil liberties, human rights etc. are only a luxury we can afford to enjoy as long as things in our society are going well and people can live as decent human beings.. But once things start going badly most people usually turn to violence, extremism and forget all about civilized behavior.. I'm pretty sure that most people in the West would be behaving in a similar fashion as people in the Middle East, Africa or Latin America if they were suffering just the same.. or if they were suffering like the Germans in the 30s.. And I don't think that's an exaggeration.. It's no coincedence that we had so frequently wars in Europe up until a century ago.. It was because people's living standards were that low.. Poverty was a basic factor that often led to conflict.. And America was of course reduced to the status of the "Wild West" with lots of conflict for the exact same reason.. I fear we still have a very long way ahead of us as a species before we reach Utopia.. :/

I can believe it! Here's a guy who, as part of his normal routine, whenever he gets a script, sits down and reads the whole thing from cover to cover 200 times! And that's before he even starts working on his character!
