Everything Wrong With Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) In 20 Minutes Or Less

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a classic. It's great. Gene Wilder gives a career performance, the songs are fun, but hey... this movie still has sins!

Thursday: sins of a really ambitious movie.

Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

That’s a sin on you for not taking five sins off Wonka’s introduction. Gene Wilder himself came up with the idea, and I’m still in awe over that beautiful somersault he did!

Gene said he insisted on that scene. It was our first time seeing Willy Wonka and it was super weird and deceptive. His reason for insisting on it was, after this stunt you can never really trust Wonka again. And he was right. It set the tone for the whole rest of the movie.

There's an interview with Gene Wilder where he talks about all the kids. He said actress who played Veruca Salt was actually a very sweet little girl, who at first had a hard time even acting like such a brat. He said he really liked all the kids, with the exception of the boy who played Mike Teavee, who was apparently a real life brat, and about whom Gene actually said, "I'd like to shoot him." 😂

My fave behind the scenes fact about this movie is that the nightmare boat scene, where Gene just starts randomly singing/screaming, was completely improvised. And Gene didn’t tell anyone he planned to do that. So all the parents and kids reactions were genuine. I watched one interview where they talked about it and apparently in that moment people thought Gene was having a mental breakdown 😂

Wondrous Boat Ride (The song he sings) was actually taken directly from the book the film was based on, except for the lines "Are the fires of hell a-glowing? Is the grisly Reaper mowing?", which were added in specifically for the movie.

The part of this movie that scared me as a kid wasn’t the tunnel scene, it was the scene at the end when Wonka yells at Charlie and Grandpa Joe. Just seeing this loveable character yell at the top of his voice terrified me, and i had to literally hide whenever it came on.

Even as a kid, I always enjoyed the pre-factory sequences. The random clips of adults going to crazy extremes to find golden tickets and Charlie's insane teacher are hilarious. My personal favorite teacher quote: "I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest. Pencils ready!"

I love this version of the movie. I have the DVD. The Oompa Loompas were all different. Not computer cloned. The Johnny Depp version was just ok. Did you know that Wilder's dialogue during the crazy boat ride was made up by Gene? He didn't tell the other actors what he had planned. So, they weren't acting. They were genuinely freaked out. The scene with the teacher is great where he says "two? well I cawn't figure out just two!" To this day my wife and I will routinely say "well I cawn't figure that out..." when asked to do something relatively simple. Our homage to Willy Wonka. So, yes, there is some merit to the early part of the movie.

The "Charlie and the ticket survive this" sin actually has some merit to it. I rewatched this movie at the theater tonight and during the murmur of background voices as Charlie is mobbed Mr. Jopek the newsman can be heard clearly saying "Stop! You'll kill him!" before he's able to pull Charlie out of harm's way. So even the movie acknowledges the poor kid was in danger of losing his life over the damn ticket!

I was just 10 or 11 years old when I saw this movie just after it's theatre release and I am proud to be old enough to remember the impact that it had on a young person totally unexpecting everything that glued me to the cinema screen without ever making me want to lose my illusions. Entering the Chocolate Room stayed with me as a magical experience for many years, and even now as an adult I find it difficult to look beyond the majesty of all their illusions to see warehouse walls and windows. Maybe that's why CGI is less real, but more affective because you will nevef see the reality 😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

God, I remember watching this when my grade school did Willy Wonka for our graduating class's mandatory musical. I remember that when we did the floating room, the two kids playing Grandpa Joe and Charlie hid behind these changing screens and the things that floated were hangers with their clothes on it and paper cutouts of their faces attached to the top of the hangers, the two guys singing behind the changing screens. I was Mrs. Gloop, so I have a lot of nostalgia for this movie, and seeing the flaws is just great.

I love this movie, love Gene's Willy Wonka, and love the book it was adapted from. But all points made were very true. Although as a small child, I was never frightened by anything in the movie and never questioned Wonka's intentions because I viewed him as some sort of fairy godfather to Charlie. He wasn't an actual person, he was an entity, like Santa Claus. And it's heavily implied in the book that he doesn't age like a normal human, since we don't get any backstory on him whatsoever and he has the energy of a hyperactive nine year old when he looks sixty. He also somehow knows about vermiscious knids, a shapeshifting alien explored further in The Great Glass Elevator. Now, why would a normal old choclatier know anything about deadly aliens and how to fight them off? In the books, he's not only eccentric, he's a barely human. He knows far more than any human does and has been more places than any human has. He always reminded me of Mrs. Whats-it from A Wrinkle In Time. I guess I always thought that Wonka knew much more about the contestants than he let on.

This is one reason that I loved the modern Charlie and the chocolate factory. The original seems like it is just coincidence that they had rooms that fit all the 'bad' kids obsession and bad habits. The new one made it clear that all of those rooms were intentionally set up to draw out the 'bad' side of the kids to see if they would take advantage of it or not.

16:30 This scene surprised me when it showed as it was NOT in the book. Normally filmmakers tweak or delete scenes from the books they adapt from but in this case they completely made the scene up. Charlie is supposed to be a conscientious bright kid who would have noticed what happens to others that do that don't think before they act. He would never have stolen the soda. Sorry for venting but this scene really irritated me as a kid and spoiled an otherwise great film.

A slightly more disturbing thought than Wonka just happening rooms that play to the children's vices is that he took the time to research the kids and then specifically built the rooms and devices for each child as a test to see if they could overcome their flaws. And given how he gaslights everyone this is a distinct possibility.

At 8:55, the chocolate shop clerk gives Charlie an exact chocolate bar that contains the golden ticket. There is a theory that it is fixed by Wonka et al so that Charlie wins.
Lyca31 Hace 7 meses
Wonka had Slugworth help him research the kids who won the tickets and he planned the whole thing out, making the rooms in accordance with the kids flaws. That's why there wasn't enough seats in the boat. Wonka knew Augustus would be sucked up into the pipe. It was all in his evil masterplan.
MrRiddler6 Hace un año
for me the biggest sin is that the odds thatCharlie would actually find a golden ticket the final day of the contest since the tour of the factory took place the following day. more so that the factory would be located in Charlie's home town. Because if Charlie lived anywhere else in the world given his family finial situation, he would not have the finances or means to get there in one day.

Stop the Philosophical Zombies
@Sparkletta! Yeah I get the joke but connecting it to Thanos is such a random reference. Very Family Guy style humor where they just make a reference to something everyone knows and then just by getting the reference you are supposed to think it's funny.
Stop the Philosophical Zombies
@Talyn has time Yeah I think I was just overthinking a bad joke.

@Stop the Philosophical Zombies It’s because this channel has combined “satire” with genuine attempts at criticism that mostly don’t work, so it leaves you the viewer confused and me unsatisfied. They want to have their cake and eat it too.

The boy who played Mike TeeVee was a Jeopardy contestant a few years back. His wife had been a contestant a couple of years before that and mentioned that she was married to the guy that had played Mike TeeVee. Looks like he finally became a TV star for 30 minutes some 40+ years later.

It makes me so happy that they finally did this. Also, if they were to watch joshscorcher and his Everything Great About Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) 2 parter, I think they would literally hire him as a writer. Burton brought Dahl's vision to life, and Roald's wife was the executive producer of the film, instead of having everything written behind their backs. She was VERY protective of the story after the 1971 version caused such outrage in her husband and the fans.

The tickets were likely released one at a time with Slugworth following the case to the town in which they would be sold. I have a family member that works in printing, and when Yoplait had the grand prize winning yogurt lid printed it was taken in a locked briefcase and carried out by Yoplait employees rather than shipped by the printing company.

As a science teacher, you missed egregious sins when Charlie's teacher hands a 10 year old an open bottle of nitric acid with no gloves, safety goggles or apron. I would not even do that with my 16 year old students. That teacher is ripe for a major lawsuit.

12:07 Perhaps it was scripted and part of the point, but can we sin the part when Wonka plays the opening of the Marriage of Figaro overture on the mini-keyboard, and Mrs. Teevee says "Rachmaninoff :)"...but its very clearly MOZART!
