Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”

“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
- Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.

As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.

Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.

The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.

The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

Man this makes me miss them all together, as a team. Absolutely brilliant together. I remember the post 9/11 show. That was a terrible time in NY, & the country. We were all so young back then. What happened after 9/11 to the first responders, who spent weeks going through the toxic pile of rubble, was criminal. The head of the EPA came up to Ground Zero, & told them.. & the public, that the air was safe to breathe. It wasn’t. I know why Jon advocates for 9/11 First Responders, & veterans suffering from exposure to the toxic burnpits. I saw it all too bc I lived it w/ him. I’ve great admiration for him in many ways, most especially bc he’s such a good human being. I love that the main cast of the Daily Show w/ Jon are all still good friends, doing what they love. They deserve it. They’re still all brilliant. 💓. I’ll always love these guys. I remember both

@TheSilentTiger That’s a shit take. It would have been so easy to give all those first responders PPE to keep them from the hell they’re currently suffering. Everybody has always tried to help each other, especially in times of crisis. If the dangers of the dust and debris had just been acknowledged and actions had been taken to mitigate it so many people who have health problems now wouldn’t have them. There are so many pictures of people sensibly wearing n95 masks and similar PPE despite assurances that everything was safe. People aren’t coddled and weak these days. They just try to not cripple themselves and demand that the government doesn’t cripple people either through their negligence.

Wow, Steve Carrell's description of the Daily Show was spot on. I remember I was in the Navy, and the Daily Show would be on our time at 11 or 12 noon during our lunch break everyday. All the squids in my division and, if I have to guess, the whole crew on board the ship gathered to watch the Daily Show and laugh out loud. It was hilarious and never failed to lift our spirits. I didn't discover that commentary until after ESvid had truly taken off as a media platform, plus I was in middle school when 9/11 happened. I do remember, however, feeling incredibly unsettled and scared that we (i.e. Southern California) would be "next" on the terrorists' hitlist, even as a child. Years later, I finally happened upon the post-9/11 segment where Jon addressed the country in one of the most raw, heart-felt monologues I had seen. I felt every word of it then, and still do even now. I felt the same when I watched his fiery address to Congress demanding that they do their part to honor the surviving 9/11 first responders, when nobody else in power seemed to give a damn. He truly is an incredible, irreplaceable human being.

I once had this very random moment in life, I think about seven years ago, that I was having a conversation with one of my school teachers about me not feeling happy in life. She asked me what would make me happy in this very moment if money or time wasn't an issue. I jokingly said that I would just quit school right now, buy myself a plane ticket to New York (I'm from the Netherlands) and see Jon Stewart's Daily Show to which she playfully responded with "so, what are you waiting for?" Two days later I found myself sitting in the audience, watching Jennifer Aniston promoting her new film, Cake I believe it was called. It all felt so unreal that the moment I stepped out of the studio I joined the waiting line again to see the next show the very next day! This time Anne Hathaway would be the guest speaker and it took her maybe twenty seconds to accidentally spoil the complete ending of her latest movie which resulted in everyone just cracking up with no time left to actually talk about the film 😂 I don't think I've ever felt more complete in life and sometimes miss the old me. But to think that Jon quit not that long after also makes me feel like the luckiest guy alive!

Every daily show Alum is a national treasure.... but Steve Carrell is just a different level of humor when he turns it on.

From comedy to drama, that speech was pure genious. Even better than the full screenplay of some so called "comedy" movies these days.

Carrell can be the funniest guy around, but he also can grab your heart and speak to it.

Glad to see Carell being funny again, those drama movies he's done are solid, but this is definitely his bread and butter.

Wow. At first I was upset that this clip was only 5 mins long because I would love to see Steve Carell up on stage being funny for hours on end, yet somehow Steve managed to be brilliantly funny and hilarious, touching and poignant in honoring John Stewart with an awesome rollercoaster ride of emotion in a tight 5 minutes. It almost pisses me off how great his talents are showcased in such a short amount of time, like damn how can both of these guys be so gifted?? Props to both gentlemen.
